The Bears are Champs!

The Monsters of The Midway won Superbowl XX on January 7th, beating the New England Patriots easily 46-10. Mike Ditka along with "The Punky QB" lead the Bears to an oustanding 15-1 season. Walter Payton had another outstanding year although it was "The Fridge" who got a touchdown in the final game of the season.

On January 18th "That's What Friends Are For" hit #1 on the charts, raising more than 1 million dollars for The American Foundation for Aids Research. Other #1 hits in 1986 were Addicted To Love (Robert Palmer), Kiss (Prince), Rock Me Amadeus (Falco) and You Give Love A Bad Name (Bon Jovi).

January 28th is one of those days that stick with you forever. Seventy-three seconds after liftoff the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded killing the entire crew. Among those on board was Christa McAuliffe, 37, married with two children. She was to be the first school teacher in space - picked from among 10,000 entries.

Geraldo Rivera kept us all on the edge of our seats on the night of April 21. We sat in anticipation waiting to see what would be in Al Capone's vault. Unfortunately, we came to realize that it was as empty as Geraldo's skull.

April 1st saw oil prices dip below $10.00 a barrel bringing a gallon of gas down to .93 (cents). As we all know to well, today a barrel is going for about $60.00 and gas goes as high as $3.00 a gallon.

The 4th nuclear reactor at Chernobyl exploded and 31 people died in the U.S.S.R. on April 26th. The resulting steam explosion and fire released at least five percent of the radioactive reactor core into the atmosphere and downwind. As of 2004 a total of 56 people have died do to cancer from the accident.

Remember when Tom Cruise was normal? Well, that was probably back in 1986 on May 16th when Top Gun premiered. If you missed it you can probably find it on cable a couple of times a day. Other big movies out in 1986 were Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Platoon, 91/2 Weeks and The Color of Money.

On November 13th President Reagan confessed to selling arms to Iran. The Reagan Administration calculated that by selling arms to Iran, that nation would influence the Hezbollah kidnappers in Lebanon to release their hostages. Iran was in the midst of the Iran-Iraq War and could find few nations willing to supply it with weapons. However, the arms shipments began before the first hostage was taken, and ended a long time after the last hostage was released.

Last but certainly not least, from the "If this doesn't make you feel old nothing will catergory", almost a full month after we graduated on July 2, 1986 Lindsay Lohan was born.
